Ten

“Knock, knock.” I tapped the door frame as I stepped through the kitchen door.

Kira halted mid-tirade and turned, her eyes tight slits daring anyone else to make her angry. Rex continued rubbing his hand up and down Kira’s back and I took it that he’d been trying to calm her down.

“Sorry to interrupt,” I said. “Are you okay?”

“What do you care?”

At the same time as Kira answered, Rex said, “We’re fine.”

Deep breath, I told myself. I could be polite for Bunny’s sake for nothing else, even if her granddaughter seriously needed a lesson in manners. “Okay. I’d be really upset if someone destroyed a craft or food that I’d worked so hard to make. Kira, that castle was amazing and you absolutely deserved that award. Anybody with eyes could see that, regardless of…anything else.” I tried not to look at Rex. Their relationship wasn’t my business. Even if he did seem a tad too old to be dating someone as young as Kira.

“Thanks.”

Though she said it grudgingly, I was pleased to see her posture relax. She let out a breath and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, smiling a tad bit. “It was the most fun I’ve ever had at something that Bunny insisted I take part in,” she said with a smirk.

An understatement, I was certain. Anytime Bunny brought Kira to a craft night at Sassy Supplies, it had been apparent she was there against her will. Sulky and sour, Kira didn’t ever try very hard to actually complete the projects.

Which made me curious. “So, you have a passion for gingerbread then?”

“As if.” She rolled her eyes.

Ah, there was the Kira we all knew and tolerated.

Rex spoke up. “Kira is working on a degree in architecture online. Youngest student they’ve ever had apply.” His face radiated pride as he smiled down at her, eliciting a soft blush and genuine smile as Kira ducked her head.

“Wow! That’s incredible, Kira. If that castle was any indication, you’re going to ace your degree.”

A clanging sound made us all turn. A metal pan spun in circles on the tile floor, coming slowly to a stop in front of the door across the room. Whoever had knocked it down was nowhere in sight. Strange. Turning back, I couldn’t help but notice the dirt clinging to Rex’s shoes as he stepped around me to investigate. Something niggled in the back of my brain, but I was too tired to pay it any attention.

“Well, I’d better be going. Oh! I almost forgot. Mrs. Simmons and her daughter have been escorted from the property. Thought you’d like to know.” I waved bye and headed back into the fellowship hall. Taking a quick look around, I didn’t see anyone near the second door; the spinning spoon still didn’t set right with me but it would have been an odd conversation to choose to eavesdrop on so I shrugged it off and decided to locate Mom. A few lingering church members were helping to clean while a handful of others were finishing up the last of the food on their plates.
